Office Assistants Program

Report from the College Counseling Office Assistants Program in Dallas, TX

By Pam Hopkins, Administrative Assistant to the College Counseling Office, Greenhill School

College Counseling Administrative Assistants from California to New York, and in between, converged in Dallas for the Second ACCIS Program for College Counseling Office Assistants Conference.  The first was held this year at Isidore Newman School in New Orleans.  The conference was led by Jenny Byers, Director of College Counseling at Harpeth Hall.

On Sunday we departed our hotel in two Greenhill buses, heading downtown to visit the 6th Floor John F Kennedy Museum.  The group spent 90 minutes exploring the museum with many of us remembering where we were when this assassination occurred. After the museum, we attended dinner, which was generously hosted by the University of Alabama.  Thus, began the sharing of our adventures as Administrative Assistants for College Counseling Offices.

Monday morning, we arrived at Greenhill School for breakfast and a short tour of the Upper School campus.  Of course the peacocks drew the most attention, not surprising when you have 13 peacocks roaming campus.

We settled into our meeting introducing ourselves and identifying which school we are affiliated with and for how long. Together we represented:

  • 21 Day and 8 Boarding Schools
  • Enrollments of 267 to 1250
  • Senior Classes of 44 to 200
  • 1 to 32 years of service
  • Combined years of service= 300

  • Blackbaud/EE – 9

Late Monday morning we headed to Southern Methodist University (SMU).  Joe Davis, Assistant Dean of Admissions in Operations, walked us through the admissions process from the university angle, which was very helpful for us to experience.  After Joe’s presentation we took a campus tour of the admissions office at SMU.  We then sat down with the SMU admission staff to enjoy a nicely prepared luncheon.  We were treated like royalty at SMU.  Everyone was so impressed with the extended hospitality.   The Admissions office gave each of us an SMU backpack, containing an SMU insulated cup, sticker and pen.  Monday evening was spent dining in groups, meeting up with old friends in Dallas, shopping at the Galleria, visiting the peacocks at Greenhill or relaxing by the pool-side.

Finishing our conference Tuesday, we met for breakfast and wrapped up our meeting by sharing ideas on ways to deal with stress.  Some suggestions were: draw boundaries, never worry alone, laugh, drink wine (my personal favorite,) and exercise.  All the College Counseling Office Assistants expressed a desire to continue these type of conferences…we are ready!

College Counseling Office Assistants Program

ACCIS is excited to offer a new program exclusively for College Counseling Office Assistants at ACCIS member schools.

This is a great professional development opportunity for your College Counseling Office Assistant. Attendees will engage in conversation and collaboration and learn best practices from each other. In addition, the group will visit the operations area of a local Admission Office so attendees can see what happens to application materials once they are received by the university.  Given the tremendous response to the program, a second program was added.
